CRN Child and Youth Participation SIG Webinar Series

The Child and Youth Participation SIG hosted an online webinar series exploring the issues relating to children and young people's participation in research. Consisting of three webinars, the series was themed 'Children’s voices in research: navigating ethics, influence and accountability' and explored a range of topics, including:

  • Child and youth led research

  • Ethical considerations and safeguarding in research with children and young people

  • Empowering youth voices in decision making

  • Innovative methodologies for involving children and young people

  • Challenges and opportunities in child and youth participation

  • Other relevant topics

The webinar schedule was as follows:

  • In this webinar, Dr Annie Cummins hosted a masterclass on 'Exploring creative methods in participatory research with children’.

Dr Cummins is a Sociologist working in the Department of Sports, Leisure and Childhood Studies at Munster Technological University (MTU), Cork. She is a member of OMEP Ireland, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the rights of all children, and part of the editorial committee for An Leanbh Óg: a peer-reviewed Journal for Early Childhood Studies. Her research areas include creative and arts-based research methods; play and play spaces; and children’s culture.

  • In this webinar, we heard from children and young people who have participated in research projects on their experiences, including what worked for them and any advice they have for researchers considering or conducting research with children and young people in the future.

  • This webinar was a research symposium, spread over 2 dates, 24th November and 1st December. Each session featured presentations of research relevant to the themes of the webinar series. The presentations highlighted the participatory methods that are currently being used to conduct research, and showcased the results of engaging children and young people in research.

The Call for Abstracts and Research Summaries for the Children’s Voices in Research Symposium is now closed!

As part of the webinar series, a symposium was held to showcase research and activities around children and young people's participation in research. We are delighted that due to the number of high quality submissions received, we had to break the symposium into two parts. Part 1 of the symposium was held on 24th November as scheduled; part 2 was held the following week on 1st December. Both webinars took place at 1-2pm. The schedule for both sessions is below.
